Staying Healthy

I have noticed that as I have gotten older and packed my schedule fuller with more commitments, one of the items I often forget to do is to take time for healthy activities.  This includes quite time to think as well as physical activity.  Before I had a growing family this was much easier, but with my kids getting older with their own activities and ensuring my date night with my wife (a post for another time), I have noticed that health has not always been one of my highest priorities.

One of the changes I have made is to take time each morning to read and reflect.  I tend to wake up early, so instead of jumping into emails and responding I decided that I needed to make sure my mind was ready for the day.  This includes me starting with reading my bible as well as reading articles I find interesting to help get the brain juices flowing.  This has helped tremendously in not only getting me ready for the day, but it helps me maintain a strong and positive attitude for the challenges I might face that are ahead.  

Another thing I noticed as my career has grown is that I haven’t always made time for as much physical activity.  For me this used to mean that if I didn’t get a chance to go to the gym then I would just skip it.   This would go in phases and was really frustrating.  Fortunately for me, I have a great wife who is very healthy and helps me to eat good foods.  Our ideas about fitness and the fitness industry has been changing, and a whole new area has grown up in just the past few years in ways to help the busy person still focus on their physical health.  I also changed my mind set that even a 30 minute walk every day was better than just sitting around.  Enter the Withings Activité Steel.  I did a great deal of research and decided to go with the Activité Steel.  The deciding factors were that it was wearable on the wrist for all activities, they have other devices and a decent application to help track your health, it integrates with other applications, and I don’t have to charge it every single day.  It runs on a battery like a regular watch, and it looks like a real watch so I can wear it with any outfit.  Like many of the activity trackers out there it also tracks your sleep as well, which is a nice plus.

I use the food tracking application MyFitnessPal and I believe it to be one of the best diet and exercise apps out there.  It integrates with almost any activity tracker and it is owned by Under Armor.  It offers a free or premium version.  I use the free version as it fits my needs, but looking at the premium version if you were really interested in tracking your diet for more than just the macros (think athletes, those with special diet needs, etc.) then you would be well served as well.  I couldn't be happier, I love how it looks, and I am reaching my exercise and eating goals better as well.  If you are looking for something that will help make the motivation fun and keep you on track that is easy, I highly recommend these.

We can’t forget that our minds and our bodies are the only ones we will ever get.  Maintaining these are key to making a strong and fulfilling life.
